The ceramics handcrafted by Penny Spooner in her Hampshire studio are practical pieces intended to be used every day. Of course, you’ll probably want to admire them for their beauty too. Home, family and the value of time spent sharing meals are all important to Penny, and she crafts colourful, inviting tableware to make those moments even more enjoyable.
Everything in the Penny Spooner Ceramics collection is thrown on the wheel and made entirely by hand. Penny’s chosen medium is porcelain, which can be tricky to manage. In the spirit of sustainability, scraps and any failed pieces are frugally reused and the kiln is only fired up when it can be filled to capacity.
The simple contrast of white porcelain with vibrant colour is what makes Penny Spooner’s work so arresting. There’s a textural distinction, too, between the smooth coolness of the clay and the glossy lustre of the glazes. Expect big-handled mugs with dipped rims, as well as cups glazed on the inside and shaped to be held. Penny’s shades are soft yet bright and are chosen to be complementary, so you can mix and match while retaining a sense of harmony.
