The Gelim range of rugs is borne out of an inspired collaboration between noted designer Ptolemy Mann and expert producers Rugmaker. The resulting pieces prove that practicality and artistry can coexist happily. They’re things of exceptional beauty, bringing texture and colour to a room, while being reliably hardwearing.Gelim rugs are designed by artist and weaver Ptolemy Mann, and manufactured by Rugmaker. From her base in East Sussex, Ptolemy designs eye-catching floor coverings that are expertly manufactured in India or Nepal. Wool from New Zealand or Sardinia is dyed to exacting standards and woven using traditional techniques. A personal relationship between Ptolemy, Rugmaker and the master weavers and dyers they work with ensures Ptolemy’s ideas are brought vividly to life.
The designer’s signature style is ikat. As part of this technique, the weft threads of each rug are carefully dip dyed, giving the final piece a distinctively feathered pattern. Tones graduate gently from striking to subtle, allowing seemingly contrasting colours to transition effortlessly.
Bold patterns reflect Ptolemy’s mid-century modern influences, especially Bauhaus. Statement stripes, panels and organic shapes are rendered in earthy or vibrant hues reminiscent of the land, sky and sea.
Gelim’s flatweaves feature patterns precisely mirrored on the front and back, so they’re fully reversible and can be turned as needed. Each piece is a celebration of age-old techniques combined with a contemporary take on colour.
